The IUI Process + When It's Used + Success Rates
Intra-uterine insemination (IUI)
treatment is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm in a
woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of IUI treatment
is to increase the number of sperm that reach the Fallopian tubes and
increase the chance of fertilization (Pregnancy).
Sometimes nature needs help to start a pregnancy - and the IUI specialist doctor can do this by inserting the sperm a piggy back ride through a small tube into the body of the women. This type of process is known as intra-uterine insemination (IUI) or artificial insemination . The IUI specialist doctor is giving nature a helping hand by increasing the chances of the egg(ovam) and sperm meeting and the way to get pregnant.
IUI (
Intra-uterine insemination) technique
provides the sperm an advantage by giving it a head start, but it still it needs a sperm to reach and fertilize the ovam (egg ) on its own. It
is a less expensive option as compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF).
If IUI is unsuccessful you may want to talk to your concerned doctor about
other procedures and process such as IVF
.

How does IUI work?
Before
intra-uterine insemination (IUI), ovulation stimulating medications are used, in which case careful monitoring will be required to determine
when the eggs are mature. The IUI process will then be taken place
around the time of ovulation, typically about 24-36 hours after the
surge in LH hormone that indicates ovulation will be occurred soon.
A
semen sample will be washed by the lab to separate the semen from the
seminal fluid. A catheter will then be used to insert the sperm directly into the uterus through the cervix. This process maximizes the number of sperm cells that
are placed in the uterus, thus increasing the possibility of conception and increases the chance to get pregnant.
The
IUI procedure takes only a few minutes of time and involves minimal pain.
The next phase is to watch for signs and symptoms of pregnancy.
What's the treatment for IUI?
IUI (intra-uterine insemination )
requires ovulation, at least one open fallopian tube, and a semen
sample with healthy and good quality of sperm. Each IUI treatment process is known as a
"cycle" – the time from the first day of your period(cycle) to the ovulation and
insemination and then a pregnancy test two weeks later.
The IUI treatment procedure usually goes something like this:
* Production of Egg:
The ovaries produce eggs (ovams) for fertilization.
Your concerned doctor may recommend an "unstimulated," or natural, IUI cycle,
meaning no fertility medicines are used. Or a doctor may give you a
fertility medicine (FSH or HMG types of hormones) at the beginning of your period to stimulate the ovaries
to produce many mature and healthy eggs. (Lady normally release only one egg a
month.)
* Tracking the eggs : An ovulation
detection kit can help you pinpoint ovulation, which is necessary for the insemination. When an egg bursts or comes out from its follicle, the kit shows
a telltale surge in luteinizing hormone (LH Hormone), and insemination usually takes place in the next day. Your concerned doctor can also monitor when ovulation
occurs by doing an ultrasound process.
* Washing of the sperm :
Once you get ovulate, now it's a time for your male partner to produce a sperm sample,
which is then "washed." to get the sperm from the semen. This process concentrates the hardiest sperm
into a small amount of fluid.
* Insemination of sperm :
Your concerned doctor uses a thin, long tube (a catheter) to put the concentrated
sperm which was taken out from semen , directly into the uterus through the cervix. The procedure is basically painless, but some women feel little bit of pain.
* Test of the pregnancy : The next phase is to check the pregnancy . A pregnancy test is done about two weeks after insemination of sperm process.
After the IUI procedure, you may be prescribed progesterone. This is basically taken via a vaginal suppository.
A week after the IUI process, your concerned doctor will check your progesterone levels, estrogen, and (maybe) HCG levels.
Ten to 15 days post IUI process, your doctor may order a pregnancy blood test to check the pregnancy symptoms.
What are the risks of IUI?
The
chances of becoming pregnant with multiples is increased if you take
fertility medication when having IUI. There is also a small risk of
infection after IUI.
Success rates depend on a couple's fertility
problem and age bar. Studies have found that for couples with unexplained
infertility, the pregnancy rate for each natural IUI cycle is about 4 to
5 percent(%), and when fertility medicines or hormones are used, the
pregnancy rate increased about 10 to 16 percent(%).
Success Rates of IUI process?
The success of IUI depends on several factors. If a couple has the IUI
procedure performed each month, success rates may reach as high as 40%
per cycle depending on variables such as female age, the reason for
infertility, and whether fertility drugs were used, among other
variables.
While IUI is a less invasive and less
expensive option, whereas pregnancy rates from IUI are lower than those from
IVF. If you think you may be interested in IUI, talk with your concerned IVF/IUI specialist doctor to
discuss the procedure.
If you are planning to get pregnant and looking
for information to get support your efforts, we invite you to check out the
fertility product and resource guide IVF/IUI specialist doctor(gynecologist).
However, if you are looking
for testing or options to increase the fertility chances of pregnancy, you can consult a nearest fertility specialist doctor or gynecologist.
